Pandamonium Day 5: Drew Mcconnell's Helsinki-wed 13 Jan
9th January 2015
Artist Profile »

Oh my rampant puddings it's...Day Five of PANDAMONIUM '15!!!
Drew McConnell's Helsinki head to the Sebright Arms on January 14th!!!
Supporting cast Doe + Fake Laugh double up to relaunch fierce panda singles!!!

It's become as traditional as regretful cardigans, revengeful relatives and the general sad-faced stout-bellied post-Christmas fudge. Never fear, Pandamonium '15 is soon here, with fierce panda records and Club Fandango and Disorder Promotions and some cheeky friends uniting forces to shine some light on the New Year gigging scene, as they have been doing since making some calendar space in 1999. The venues are small and cool. The bands are cool and small. The nights are young, the mood is mellow and there is music in our ears. Day 5 of Pandamonium '15 is a night of gently shambolic glories starring Drew McConnell’s Helsinki preparing for a March-time album release, with esteemed support from Doe and Fake Laugh, the first two bands to appear on fierce panda’s sensationally resurrected singles ‘club’ which is officially re-launched on this very night.

Fierce Panda & Club Fandango present

The Sebright Arms, Hackney

HELSINKI (onstage 10.00pm) Ostensibly the pet project of Drew McConnell, bass player in Babyshambles, Helsinki is a free-flowing collection of musicians instinctively creating a lovely organic gumbo of semi-acoustic rattlings with a subtle but thoroughly dignified pop sensibility. Drew McConnell’s Helsinki’s ‘Rising Heights’ single is out on fierce panda on February 23rd, with the ‘A Guide For The Perplexed’ following on March 2nd.

DOE (onstage 9.15pm) are three boy / girl / boy punkstas from London Town who play terrifically buoyant guitar-gripping indierock with a nod to the cool collegiate thrustings of the past, as you may expect from a band who reference Sleater-Kinney, Pavement and Breeders as influences. Their current 'First Four' album on Specialist Subject Records collects together their first, um, four EPs, and Doe are next releasing the second single on fierce panda's reborn one-off singles 'club'. It's called 'Basement’ / ‘Avalanche’ and it's out on February 16th.

FAKE LAUGH (onstage 8.30pm) are a London-based quartet led by Kamran Khan who self-released their endearingly fragile ‘Freely’ EP last year. Next comes the ‘Kinda Girl’ single, a shimmering retropop epic which makes like the baby Walker Brothers and is released on the resurrected fierce panda singles ‘club’ – the first such release for nine years – on January 19th. Lauren Laverne has already played it on BBC 6 Music, and liked it greatly.
