The Truth: SCHOOL IS COOL is a youthful alternative musical collective
from Antwerp, Belgium. They have been described at various times
as ‘freakfolk’, ‘baroque pop’ and ‘indiehop’. ‘The World Is Gonna End Tonight’ is
their official freakfolking, baroque-popping, indiehopping debut single in the UK,
although our continental cousins have already experienced the SIC pleasures of the
band in various ways: last year they played over 60 festivals across Europe, and at the
tail end of 2011 they released their ‘Entropology’ album back home. Produced by Das
Pop’s Reinhard Vanbergen the album went gold in the very first week and SCHOOL
IS COOL were nominated for no fewer than five Belgian music industry awards.
With such a busy domestic schedule it’s hardly surprising then that their dealings with
Blighty have been slightly more flirtatious: a brief visit to Camden Dublin Castle last
year was followed by a return trip to NW1 to Proud this spring and then a sweatily-
received show at the recent Great Escape in Brighton City. Along the way they visited
Club Fandango at the Bull & Gate the day before Valentine’s Day this year, which
was the catalyst for this here release on Label Fandango, the fierce panda sister label
which has been a jumping off point for various actettes such as Fanfarlo, Air Traffic,
Hey Sholay and Dingus Khan over the years.
‘The World Is Gonna End’, which has already racked up plays from Steve Lamacq,
Huw Stevens and John Kennedy, also comes backed by a suitably chilling / thrilling
video. It’s one of a pawful of terrifically playful visual accompaniments to the
SCHOOL IS COOL canon which befits a band who tag themselves as playing “a
fresh style of adventurous indie pop”, whilst name checking Kate Bush, Arcade Fire,
Paul Simon, Pixies and Dodos.
Lovers of fine pale continental lagers might also hear echoes of the orchestral traumas
of fellow low-lying countrymen dEUS in the more more dramatic flourishes of ‘The
World Is Gonna End’, but don’t hesitate to go see and hear for yourself at this link
