The Truth: Desperate Journalist consist of two girls and two boys who have crashlanded in the wilds of North London. Jo Bevan (vocals), Simon Drowner (bass), Rob Hardy (guitar) and Caz Hellbent (drums) - for 'tis they - were lured together by fate and a fierce sense of what makes alternative music actually really bloody alternative. They started their journey at the local Negative Creep grunge club night in Finsbury Park on February 23rd 2013 and have barely looked back since.
‘Happening' / 'Vengeance' is their third single release. The 'Happening' A-side happens to showcase the same glittery guitar notes and pulsating rhythm section that would sound right on Ally Sheedy from The Breakfast Club's Walkman headphones, while 'Vengeance' highlights Jo's compelling voice with a hypnotic bassline which owes as much to Fleetwood Mac as it does to Siouxsie & The Banshees.
Together the two tracks suggest once again that there is something fantastically passionate and uncontrived about Desperate Journalist: as last year's singles 'Cristina' and 'Organ' proved there is glowering joy to be found in Rob's sparkly 12-string guitar sparklings, and live shows across London with Six By Seven, Throwing Up and at Hatcham Social’s Crocodile Club showcased a band not afraid of giving their patented blend of melody and melodrama a great big gothic cuddle. The quartet are also unafraid of the great outdoors, judging by the open aired vibes of all their videos thus far, including 'Happening' which was Q's Track Of The Day.
Better still, in brilliantly post-modern fashion the Desperate Journalist name is lifted from a Peel Session track by The Cure which berated Paul Morley for an NME review of their album (fact fans may care to know that the song was ‘Grinding Halt’ which was pithily re-christened ‘Desperate Journalist In Ongoing Meaningful Review Situation’ for the occasion).
Unsurprisingly Desperate Journalist have already gone down searingly well with real life ex-desperate journo Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music. Other laptop-tapping enthusiasts of the Desperate Journalist sound lurk at Artrocker (“Powerful, melodic and full of emotion.”), Time Out (“Shimmering post-punk.”) and The Quietus ("Thoroughly ace."). Come see some of that powerful shimmering aceness at these gigs here...
