The movers and shakers behind Club Fandango are very much delighted to announce that A Fistful Of Fandango 2 will be taking place at the 229 venue on London’s Great Portland Street between Tuesday 2nd September and Saturday 6th September 2008.
This five night stand will see Team Fandango once again take over the whole 229 venue and each evening will deliver three bands in the large Room 1 and three bands in the petite Room 2. That makes a total of six bands a night for five consecutive nights, which means a grand total of 30 acts in a week.
Never afraid to blindly jump in at the deep end where others sensibly fear to paddle, Club Fandango launched A Fistful Of Fandango 2 on a ning and a prayer in September 2007 with 24 bands playing over four nights at a new unproven venue with a new unproven sound system.
Predictably enough the first night was bedevilled by technological gremlins and the opening band had their onstage time shoved back by two hours.
Happily, the career of Royworld – for ‘twas they – seems to have remained heroically un-derailed by the experience, and the wrinkles were swiftly ironed out. Even more happily Maps, Shitdisco, Electric Soft Parade and British Sea Power provided headline distractions, while scattered around the support acts across the two rooms there lurked the handsome likes of Friendly Fires, Pete & The Pirates, Malcolm Middleton, Fanfarlo, Operator Please and quite literally more.
And so A Fistful Of Fandango 2 instantly branded itself onto the rump of the London live diary, snuggling in at the tail end of the festival season in between Reading / Leeds and Bestival. Like a perturbed relative of the Camden Crawl A Fistful Of Fandango 2 was embraced as a supercool indiecity event for the going out generation and a mammoth stack of media previews and reviews bears testament to the wild optimism of Team Fandango in the pub all those months earlier.
A Fistful Of Fandango 2 promises to be bigger and better. Aided by Club Fandango’s regular midweek events in the small room and some judiciously chosen sell out shows in the big room (Razorlight, Biffy Clyro, The Raveonettes, The Duke Spirit et al) the 229 has established itself on the ferociously competitive London venue scene while the techie gremlins are a distant memory. The usual Club Fandango friends and partners will all be involved, from BBC 6 Music and Rock Sound magazine to BMI, amazingtunes.com and beyond.
And with a capacity of 800 across the two rooms the potential audience for the whole event is a massive 4000 guitar-crazed, synth-fazed punters.
So then. 2 stages: 5 nights: 30 bands: @ the 229. And all happening very soon. Let’s go to work…
