Matagot are a riot-pop band from South East London. They met studying music at Goldsmiths and have played together under various guises ever since vocalist/ guitarist/cellist Rose Asprey, bassist Joe Reed and vocalist/keyboardist/lyricist Katie Dove-Dixon started playing together in their bedrooms in 2010. When Myles McCabe joined as a drummer in 2014, Matagot was born. Taking the ethos of riot grrrl bands and feminist musicians such as Juliana Hatfield and Liz Phair- artists who formed the soundtrack to Katie and Rose’s teenage years- and combining them with brutal lyrics and tangled harmonies, Matagot sing songs about girls, bodies, and things that make them angry.
MATAGOT GIGS AT CLUB FANDANGO
Taking their name from a cat-sprite featured in French folklore that they found in The Concise Encyclopaedia of Cats (1974), Matagot start the summer of 2014 by releasing two tracks, ‘Lidless’ and ‘Teeth’.
