Director
Director - That Dublin’s Director are a bit of a contradiction in terms can only be a good thing. By turns providing an onslaught of monster riffs, apocalyptic drums and a relentless wiry rock juggernaut the foursome’s more refined (read quiet, maladjusted, unsociable) sensibilities places them closer in spirit to Larry David than David Lee Roth. Over the course of two full length albums the band have charted a choppy course through the myriad twists and turns of awkward, complicated, unhappy relationships. Where others might go out on a limb, make an explosive gesture, hell even buy the girl some flowers you get the sense that Director will circle the wagons, pull out the spreadsheets and do a thorough cost-benefit analysis as to where it all went wrong. Swinging the pendulum between the depths of despair and rapturous if diffident love songs it is difficult to glean if singer Michel Moloney will ultimately end up surrounded by a bevy of adoring beauties or bitterly alone. On stage the band resemble an uncomfortable cabaret act with Napoleon Dynamite as ringleader but once Moloney’s unmistakable croon takes over the band take flight with ruthless efficiency laying on an elegant display of infectious guitar pop that takes in as much caressing as pummelling. Sour and sweet, quiet and loud, glasses and no glasses. Their second album I’ll Wait For Sound will be released in the UK on the 14th September.
