Mammal Club
Mammal Club are from Newcastle, but that doesn’t really matter. Coming together at some point in 2009, their output since has been slim but precise, taking pop melodies and dramatising them, crafting interlocked mazes of noise that simultaneously work on many levels. Dizzying and masterful, their sound is of a band just about keeping control of utter chaos. It’s been labelled avant pop, and there are shades of the less tedious aspects of math-rock in there too, but labels kind of fall away with something this expansive and fearlessly experimental. There have been comparisons to Everything Everything too, but that’s more out of lazy journalism than anything else – something, admittedly, not helped by the support slot the band undertook last year. However, 2011 should see the band step out of the shadows with the release of their debut EP on Everybody’s Stalking, coinciding with a series of self-run, DIY gigs under the railway arches of their hometown – another mark of their unique ingenuity.
