So Club Fandango's shiniest newest showcase night called 'Rising' is now in its fifth month. It is supported by the kind hearts at Music Week. It takes place at the excellent Black Heart in the black heart of Camden Town on the first Thursday of each and every month. This months line-up sees Desperate Journalist launch their new single 'Happening' to the music loving public, the track showcases the same glittery guitar notes and pulsating rhythm section that would sound right on Ally Sheedy from The Breakfast Club's Walkman headphones. They are joined by fellow Londoners Brunch and one of America's finest new bands the very American named Cheerleader.
DESPERATE JOURNALIST (onstage 10pm) consist of two girls and two boys who have crashlanded in the wilds of North London. Jo Bevan (vocals), Simon Drowner (bass), Rob Hardy (guitar) and Caz Hellbent (drums) - for 'tis they - were lured together by fate and a fierce sense of what makes alternative music actually really bloody alternative.
Unsurprisingly Desperate Journalist have already gone down searingly well with real life ex-desperate journo Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music. Other laptop-tapping enthusiasts of the Desperate Journalist sound lurk at Artrocker (“Powerful, melodic and full of emotion.”), Time Out (“Shimmering post-punk.”) and The Quietus ("Thoroughly ace.").
New single 'Happening' is released on 5th May and you can watch the video here on YouTube
BRUNCH (onstage 9.10pm) are a very new London based band. They play raw guitar music reminiscent of the likes of Yuck. Although they are ever so new Mr. Steve Lamacq has already found space on his BBC Music 6 show for them, give the track a listen here www.brunchmatters.bandcamp.com
CHEERLEADER (onstage 8.20pm) are a quintet from Philadelphia that radiates hazy electro-pop. The band release new single 'Perfect Vision' over here in the UK on June 16th courtesy of Young & Lost / Bright Antenna. Give it a 'P' give it a 'L' give it a A'' (you get the idea) here www.soundcloud.com/cheerleadersounds
