May is a special show as it acts as a super warm-up for the fierce panda / Label Fandango Day By The Seaside on Friday May 19th, which sees the two record companies join furces with End of the Trail to put on 18 bands at East Street Tap for the Alternative Escape. Those panda / Fandango bands include Ghost Suns and 485C and three of the acts playing tonight, those three acts being National Service, Softer Still and Giant Party, as per this story here: http://www.fiercepanda.co.uk/news.php?story=554

As a bonus opening this evening’s show is Canadian troubadour LeRiche, who is warming up for his own Alternative Escape show at Brighton Black Lion on Friday lunchtime, supporting Nick Heyward. Nick bloody Heyward!!!

NATIONAL SERVICE (onstage 10.00pm) In spite of being barely a handful of gigs old from their top secret rehearsal cupboard (in Fortress Studios, Old Street) National Service create tense, tersely modern alt.rock nuggets which nod at the buoyancy of Wild Beasts and the restlessness of Radiohead while bursting into manic sonic life at the most unexpected moments. Debut single ‘A Little More Time’ encapsulates that driving belligerence perfectly, revelling in the quartet’s honest vocals, dense harmonies and brooding hypnotic grooves. www.facebook.com/nationalservicemusic

SOFTER STILL (onstage 9.15pm) Softer Still are a sparkly indie band from Shepperton, Surrey. They capture the modern dream-pop sound of the likes of Wild Nothing and Beach House combined with the classic indie sounds of The Cure and The Railway Children. The band are essentially a DIY project but manage to capture perfect blissful production from their own studio, located in a garage. ‘Wishing Well’ is their suitably wistful new single. www.facebook.com/softerstillband

GIANT PARTY (onstage 8.30pm) played their first ever live show in December ’16, so these newbies are as new as they come. Even so, DIY have still had time to opine: “Building from comparisons with Wild Beasts and Twin Shadow, Giant Party bring stately vocals and bags of style…” Slinkily '80s-tastic single 'Ambulances' is out now on Label Fandango. www.facebook.com/giantpartyband

LERICHE (onstage 7.45pm) is from Newfoundland, on the eastern tip of Canada. He releases his ‘Under Covers’ single on fierce panda on May 12th, and a bruised peach of understated emoting and fragrant melodies it is, too. www.facebook.com/lerichemusic
