After a Winter of Dyscontent and a coiled Spring humming with potential, one-man Medway chaos machine Lupen Crook is preparing to reassert his presence with a vengeance. This reassertion will come via a combination of single, video and album releases, plus live performances at some of the UK’s most prestigious music festivals in the company of the Crooked Clan, aka Tom Langridge (keyboards, guitar, percussion, arrangements and vocals), Bob Langridge (drums, percussion and vocals) and Clayton Boothroyd (bass). A double ‘A’ side single comprising ‘World’s End’ / ‘Devil’s Son’ will be released via Label Fandango on 12 July 2010. This is Lupen’s first recorded output of the year, and typical of a character who over the course of his two previous albums hasn’t so much attracted trouble as invited it in for a few drinks before trying to seduce it, it features two wildly differing sides of the Crooked coin: ‘World’s End’ is a reflective and powerful tale of regret for a life lived without regard to consequence, its vulnerability underpinned by a stripped-back vocal and warm, wistful harmonies. By stark naked contrast, ’Devil’s Son’ invokes the full power of Mr Crook’s band in a blistering attack of self-analysis and defiant nihilism. Both tracks were recorded by Jim Riley in the earthy environment of Ranscome Studios in Medway and remixed by legendary producer Howie B (Bj??rk, U2, Tricky). Howie has also worked on the third Lupen Crook album, ‘The Pros and Cons of Eating Out’, destined for release in the Autumn. A video for ‘World’s End’ was recently completed by Medway film-maker Dave Wise, on location in the bleak and sparse setting of Dungeness on the Kent coast. Suffering heroically for his art, Mr Crook flirted with hypothermia in the icy waters of the English Channel, before being “rescued” by band members Bob and Tom. The harrowing results can be viewed right now at http://vimeo.com/11458968 Following solo appearances at Medway's Sweeps Festival in early May (including a support slot with the renowned folk band Bellowhead), the Crooked Summer Of Hate continued at the Stag & Dagger Festival. Further appearances include Latitude, Wireless, Beautiful Days and Lounge On The Farm. In addition to these scheduled performances, the band will be staging a series of impromptu “guerrilla” outings this Summer in festival fields and other choice locations.
